You Can Become a Loser

You Can Become a Loser

The title doesn't sound good but the reality of the meaning in this case is good and what everyone wants. There are many fundamental and technical things that you can do to help yourself lose weight.  Dieting, calorie counting etc… are ways that are usually short-lived unless you really understand why you are doing them…Without getting technical, here are a few simple things that you can start to utilize immediately…

1.    Eat only when you are hungry...
2.    Fill the Fridge with Munchies!
3.    Out Of Sight… Out Of Mind
4.    Eat at the Table...
5.    Slow Down You Move To Fast
6.    Never Skip Meals
7.    Better Waste then Waist
8.    Drink Lots of Water

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

1.   Eat only when you are hungry...

Yes, It is a very simple and seems like a no-brainer…but many people do eat
     when they really aren't hungry...

Don't go out of your way to eat because you can see food in front of you or
because you did poorly on a test or you are bored, you had a bad day at work
and or have become depressed or lonely… Food is fuel and should be used as
such… Learn to understand the difference between your brain needing some
love through food binging and your stomach really needing the fuel…

2.   Fill the Fridge with Munchies!

Of course I’m talking about healthy things like fresh  vegetables and fruit… If
you have a garden, work on your green thumb… If not go to the store and get in
the habit of buying finger foods that are really good for you and a lot of times
things that you really like or can learn to really like … (seasonal fruits and
veggies are a good idea as well)  When you get the munchies, you will reach for
the healthy foods in your home if that is all you have stocked in your fridge,
     pantry and kitchen…

3.   Out Of Sight… Out Of Mind

Stay away from Junk Food TV Commercials
If you watch television, good chances you will see up to 5000 ads a day and
many of them may cause you to gain weight just by looking at them… Watching
those great and very tantalizing junk food commercials over and over again in
the same hour and day breaks down your will and your brain wins against the
stomach especially with all the technology and HD TVs out there that can make
anything look tasty!!!  So stay away from such commercials and you will have
better chance of to save yourself from binge eating… This could be the one
case where your remote control can really come in handy…

4.    Eat at the Table...

When you eat at the table your focus is mainly on what you are doing… Try not
to eat in front of the television however, because it causes mindless eating and
you may not realize that you have already finished your plate and onto second
and third helpings… Talk to your family while you eat… If you are alone enjoy
the flavor and smell of the food and chew chew chew…

5.    Slow Down You Move To Fast

Is your mouth going full bore when you eat?  You may not have realized that
this phrase from the Simon and Garfunkel song was actually about eating
habits. OK, it wasn't about eating habits but it is still very good advice.
It takes your brain between 15 and 20 minutes to figure out that there is food
in your stomach after you have put it there.  Statistics show that a large
amount of large(overweight and obese) people are fast eaters.  Again, having
people there to talk to and putting your knife, fork or spoon down while you are
chewing keeps the speed down and helps you to get fuller faster with fewer
calories in your system.  Again, if you are eating by yourself, take time to smell
the coffee or food or whatever makes you take the time to slow down and enjoy
      the meal.

6.     Never Skip Meals

Did you know that almost 100% of diets never work. When you diet a signal goes
to your brain saying that you are in starve mode and if you don't get
something to eat quickly you may die.  Your DNA doesn't realize you don't have
to kill dinosaurs to eat anymore and doesn't calculate in the big frig you got in
your kitchen.  Your brain panics and send a signal to your body to lower your
metabolism rate so you won't starve to death.  So when you start eating again
your metabolism is lower than before so you gain back weight plus extra weight
you didn't have before.    It is better to eat a lot of smaller meals a day.  Even
if you eat the same amount of calories a day your brain will not go into
starvation mode and your body will store less fat and burn more calories for
the very reason that it hasn't been deprived of fuel. (food)

 7.    Better Waste then Waist

Of course it is better to eat just enough food to make you satisfied but
sometimes we have access on our plate that we don't really need or want to
eat but feel we must eat it all because our mother's told us we had to eat
everything on our plates as kids.  If are full and really don't want to eat
anymore... it is better to waste it or give it to the dog then it is to wear it on
your waist the next day.  "Eat it Now... Wear it Tomorrow" Don't fall into that
       trap...

8.   Drink Lots of Water

Water as we all know is very important to our health...
Research has shown that drinking two glasses of water 20-30 minutes before
eating helps individuals to lose  weight quicker than those who don't and helps
those who do to keep it off in the long term as well. Most people who drink
water before a meal tend to eat 75 to 100 fewer calories per meal which
doesn't seem like a lot at first but that is a 14 to 20 lbs difference.  Plus
drinking enough water keeps you hydrated thus keeping your metabolism up.
( A simple 1%  of dehydration can cause a significant drop in anyone's
metabolism, which can become a huge factor and  interfere with weight loss.)
Also if your body is dehydrated your brain cannot tell the difference between
being thirsty and hungry so drinking enough water is essential.

Exercise...Is it really that important?

Exercise... Is it really that important?

Exercise in Japanese is 運動・(Undo=Oon Dough)

I just returned from a health event in Osaka where I was one of the speakers and trainers for the day... It was a great event and fun to watch how active and focused everyone was.

Japan is famous for its Guinness-worthy lifespan of women avg. 86 and men avg. 79 but as I talked to many of the participants after my seminar I came to the realization that the Japanese are starting to get rounder... Round is a shape but not the shape we want to be in...

The amount of obesity in Japan (3.2% obesity) of course is still minuscule compared to the USA (30.6% obese) and other countries but I was very surprised that I could actually see the difference from the year before.  After my seminar many people came up to shake my hand and a number offered me their vast experience on  exercise programs that they themselves swear by and as I listened to their philosophies I couldn't help but think that it appeared to me that the exercise programs that they swear by were not working...  And this is coming from a country that walks and bicycles a lot everyday for commuting to work etc...  So if Japan, a country that seems very active is getting rounder what does the future hold for the rest of the world that isn't very active?

Overweight is defined as weight  in excess of what is  considered normal, proper, or healthy with some risk of health problems.

Obesity is defined as the condition of being very fat or very overweight; with high  risk for major health problems...

So even being overweight can have some health risks... There are many things you can do to help yourself from being overweight and exercise is a big part.

Exercise is any physical activity that is planned, structured, and repetitive with the purpose  of conditioning any part of the body. Exercise will help you to improve health, maintain fitness and is important as a means of physical rehabilitation.

I repeat...

Exercise is a planned, structured, repetitive physical activity with a purpose...

How many people do you know that have gym membership but never lose weight... Chances are they have good intentions but no planned, probably weakly structured and making the time to go once a month is definitely not repetitive... So do you exercise with purpose... that doesn't mean you don't have a goal... it means do you exercise with a the mindset to achieve that goal?

20 reasons why you should exercise...
(not listed in order of importance... they are all important)

1   Exercise makes you feel good...NO... makes you feel great!!!
2   Elevates your metabolism= burn more calories...
3   Stronger muscles, tones... muscular endurance...
4   Raises fitness level...
5   Lower blood pressure...
6   Breakdown of more fat...
7   Stronger Heart= Stronger pump...
8   Stronger bones....
9   Produces more HDL(the good cholesterol)...
10  New blood vessels in the heart and other muscles...
11  Larger veins and arteries to and from the heart...
12  Lower risk of blood clotting in blood vessels...
13  Better digestion...
14  Better control of blood sugar...
15  Better sleep...
16  Thicker cartilage in joints...
17  Higher hemoglobin concentration=more oxygen to the lungs...
18  Lower triglycerides (fats) ...
19  Decrease in risks associated with aging...
20  Better blood flow to skin= feel and look healthier...

Let's add one more...

21  Exercise keeps you around longer so you can see your children and
     grandchildren grow up...

There are many more reasons why you should exercise but that should be enough to show you how important exercise is... Remember exercise is one of the things you can control when it comes to the aging process...

When people found out that Paul Ryan ( the man who could become the next vice president of the Unites States) was on a particular exercise program.. many people immediately went to a sporting goods store or online to buy the same exercise DVDs... People are funny...

Will it work for you like it did for Paul?

The sad truth is the most of you will give it up after a few days or so...   You need to get in the habit or exercising and you need to get into the right mindset... If you can do that... then your chances of getting into the shape you desire greatly increases with any program you choose to use...

If you are going to buy a DVD program online... do some research and consult with your doctor before going full bore into a new exercise program...

Speaking of mindset... In the next issue,  I discuss how you can lose weight and get the body you want by using your brain...   In later issues, I will discuss how to eat...not diet but how to eat and what your body is scientifically doing with the food (energy) that you consume...

Autumn and the Sunshine Vitamin

A U T U M N

Autumn in Japanese is  秋(Aki -awe key)

We know autumn is here when the leaves start to change colors, days start to get shorter and you start to reach for your jacket... Autumn jumps out at you with its energy of reds and flamboyant oranges...the colors that excite and create warmth and ambition... One fun thing you can do in autumn is to collect a ton colorful leaves, make a pile and then for no real reason jump into the middle of the pile burying yourself in the leaves... Fun Fun Fun!!! Stay healthy so you can have lots of fun jumping in your pile too :)

There are a few simple things you can watch out for to stay healthy during autumn as well...

As the days become shorter you tend to spend less time in the great outdoors, your time in the sun decreases leaving the possibility that your vitamin D intake may not be sufficient...

Vitamin D is known as the "sunshine vitamin" because it is the only vitamin (D3) that your body can make itself and if you want to get technical... it is a hormone.

How big of a deal is Vitamin D?

Let's just say, having a sufficient amount of Vitamin D... your bones will love you!  Vitamin D absorbs calcium and helps to make bones denser and makes them stronger against fractures and soft bone, helps support a healthy immune system, muscle function and helps to keep insulin, calcium and phosphorus levels in balance.
And new research findings seem to show associations between  vitamin D intake and decreases in risk of developing a variety of conditions including cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation, certain cancers and diabetes.

Recommended daily allowance(RDA) is between 600 and 800 (IU -International Units)
Some research shows that even more may be needed daily...

Ways to get your daily allowance:

1. Natural Sunlight
2. No Sunscreen
3. Tanning shower (standing tanning bed)
4. Milk
5. Egg Yolks, Salmon, Mackerel

Sunlight:  A lot of your daily requirements can be obtained by sunlight and if you are able to catch the morning rays, you can prime yourself with melatonin that helps you sleep at night and increase the levels of serotonin the "happy hormone", plus breath in fresh air that can always make you a happier camper...

No Sunscreen: It is better not to use sunscreen etc... during the autumn and winter months especially so you are able to get your needed dose of sunlight everyday.

Tanning Shower: Those of you that belong to a gym can go to tanning shower(vertical tanning machine)  and soak in the rays for 3 minutes..(you aren't there to tan just to get your Vitamin D dose)

Milk:   Unpasteurized milk has natural vitamin D in it as well as many other health enhancing nutrients... Pasteurizing milk may destroy some or all of the natural vitamin D so is fortified with Vitamin D.  It is also worth noting that it is much more difficult for the body to use fortified nutrients than the real thing.

Egg Yolks, Salmon and Mackerel: are the foods with the highest amount of vitamin D in it. These foods should be considered for eating especially in the autumn to winter months.   Alaska Wild Salmon is one of the most delicious and and cleanest fish in the world.

There are supplements that can be taken as well but it is best to consult with a physician before taking Vitamin D supplements...

*****The most efficient way to ensure your body gets the right amount in the most natural form is for the body to make Vitamin  D itself...
