Mental Toughness

"Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory."

I have been working with a high school baseball pitcher with a rocket for an arm but the nerves of a worm...well that is the way he put it...  Yes, he could be pro material... Yes he could bring the heat and make batters cringe in the batters box...
So I say...

"Kill the snake of doubt in your soul, crush the worms
of fear in your heart and mountains will move out of
                                                                 your way."

The theory is that mental toughness is an important and integral part of  success and positive outcomes in pretty much everything we do in life...

Some of the key characteristics of mental toughness can and do relate to:
consistency in all you set out to do
desire to be better than your present and past self
focus on that which you want to do next and ways to get you there
winning attitude when overcoming setbacks,
resilience to meet the inevitable obstacles and inequities of life and concentration. of a genuine effort to receive what is being communicated...

PRACTICE: Becoming mentally tough does not happen overnight. To become mentally tough one must experience a wide-range of situations that are both positive and negative. However, the fastest way to get genuine mental toughness is to work on the above key characteristics until they are ingrained and come natural to you

APPLICATION: We are all performers when it gets right down to it... A performer needs to practice what they have learned. Thus, any skills that are taught must be practiced. Overtime individuals become mentally tough.  And when you have a mental edge, nothing can stop you.

The baseball players, Ichiro and Matsui would have never crossed the ocean  to play in the Major Leagues if it wasn't for Nomo and his mental toughness when most of Japan told him he could never make it in the big leagues...  He proved them wrong in two leagues and Japan baseball players are mentally stronger from the core because of it...  We all have the potential to do what we want.  You have to pick a cause you won't abandon easily, remain committed despite setbacks, and communicate your big ideas over and over again in every encounter you have with your positive and negative self and overcome until it is all positive.

As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.

We Got the Music in Us

On the day that I was born, my father put a baseball glove in my hand so naturally I became an athlete and a really good one too… And I continue to excel in sports through my adult life as well...  So things that influence us from an early age seem to stick with us throughout our lives…

There was one other force I remember now that was always a part of my life…

Music!!!

I always knew music had the power to take me to new heights when I was training and trying to get that extra little power burst… The music helped me to get there… Waking up to Bon Jovi’s “Living On a Prayer” was so much better than an alarm clock. It started off small, gradually gaining volume and speed, and at the perfect moment when my whole body was waking up and the blood was churning, a full power blast of “Tommy Used to Work on the Docks” popped me out of bed and ready for the day ahead… Yes, I am singing it right now! Join in if you like!!!

Now scientific research is showing that we are definitely hard-wired to respond to music and in many different ways and were probably influenced by it while still in the womb… We all know that music soothes the soul… and soothes the savage beast!

Research is now showing that music does and is able to stimulate more parts of the brain than any other human function!  It may become one of the few powers that can truly help to fix the body physically without drugs …Much more research is needed of course but some benefits are already being noticed

Singing for just 10 minutes a day has been shown to help reduce stress, clears sinuses, improve posture and can even help you live longer!!! Studies go on to say that music may someday help to heal strokes and other diseases like Parkinson’s etc… There are also cases of people who have had strokes and are unable to speak, regain some of the speech by singing the sentences they want to say.  We also seem to fix  music on to a lot of our  memories so  new techniques with the use of music could is promising to be helpful for Alzheimer's patients...

Hank Jones, a legendary pianist who was a good friend of mine,  said, " I am the sum total of everything that I have experienced musically. "  We might now all be cut from the same cloth as Hank was when it comes to music but if we put in our 10 minutes in the shower or doing karaoke or even singing down the road... one thing is for sure...it will change us for the better...

You can change yourself and start to change the world for the better too ... music is one of the powerful tools and music can change the world because it can change people...

It just takes 10 minutes a day to get started to fixing yourself and the world...

Sometimes I do need to go to karaoke, sometimes I need to relax.
Jackie Chan

I like the Rolling Stones for karaoke. 'Sympathy For The Devil' is a great one.
Hugh Jackman

The only thing better than singing is more singing...

Aging is inevitable!
Health is a choice!

The way you think, the way you behave, and the way you eat, can seriously influence your life by 30 or more years...

Do you think about your body like you think about eating breakfast, lunch and dinner...you don't really think about it, you just have it ?!!

What is this world coming to when people think that it is the fault of fast food shops and tobacco companies for their guts and butts getting fatter and their many hospital visits and health problems that mysteriously seem to pop up...(fact: The Chinese consume 50,000 cigarettes every second.)

Let's take a shot of reality here people...  You are the one filling your face. You are the one taking a drag on a lit cig with the surgeon warning starring you right in the eyes...You are the one who thinks exercising is getting into the shape of a couch potato...  How can you blame it on something or someone else when all of these things are in your control?  It is very simple!!! And when you realize that it is you who has control of whatever shape your body and mind are in--that is the first step to heading into a healthier direction and a healthier you... YOU YOU!!!

A Japanese singer friend wrote a song (in Japanese of course) but some of the lyrics go like this...
"Stress makes the world go bad... Humans make the earth go bad... Humans make humans go bad..."(sing along if you like...oh you already are?)  Not much to the lyrics but the point is made... And when it comes to the health of any nation and especially the US right now...  “The next major advancement in the health industry initiative of the American people will not be determined by the next super drug that comes out or by making marijuana legal but will be determined by what the individual is willing to do for himself.”

JFK said, "Don't ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country... How about doing both at the same time... Doing something for yourself that actually does something for the country at the same time... Get in shape...stay healthy physically and mentally... You not only get into shape, feel better, and become a beacon for others including your children to follow(you want to be around to see your child get married, right?)  who are losing the fight to cellulite, you wind up being able to do something that Obama cannot do... Balance the budget...

The solution to getting rid of tons of personal body fat and USA deficit fat is to use  a balancing ball more, walk more, eat better and smaller portions, get positive and to be an example to others.

The solution of  this problem is to stop and reverse ours, yours and the worlds epidemic of chronic diseases, and thereby lowering health costs to a low and all time sustainable single-digit percentage of the GDP.  We like to practice golf to get a lower score...  If we practice life the same way, those "lower scores" equal a healthier life; a healthier environment, a healthier country, and a healthier world...

The important variable over which we have control is whether we remain healthy as we age. We must teach ourselves and get health help from others who are doing just that. Make no mistake... This epidemic is man-made, woman-made, self-made, we can choose to unmake it through ways that are not so drastic, not so new that you have never tried them before... It isn't rocket science people...but if learning about rockets helps to keep another donut out of your mouth... DO IT !!!  With healthy individuals being the exception these days and with childhood disease rates increasing everyday, showing by example and teaching children how to improve health and avoid disease will produce  immediate results in health and well-being plus, not if but when you are able to do this, your family, your company, your country all save with a reduction in costs and with  savings of quality of life and yes, money too, compounded each year.  Health and financial interest? Now that is interest that I'm interested in...

Aging is inevitable!
Health is a choice!
The choice is yours!

"Exercise--Labor Without Weariness"

Burning desire to be or to do something gives us staying power - a reason to get up every morning or to pick ourselves up and start over again!" Make that reason to get up exercise and utilize that burning desire !!!

Reasons to exercise in the morning

If I had to pick a single and actually simple to do factor that I thought was  important in a successful exercise or weight loss program for you all, it would be to exercise first thing in the morning... every morning!  Continue to exercise every morning and  when you put on your underwear  the fruit-of-the-loom guys won't be laughing at you anymore!

Some mornings, you may just be able to fit in a 10-minute walk, but it's important to try to do something... every morning...

So why in the morning?

Over 90 percent of people, who exercise consistently, do it in the morning. If you want to exercise consistently, odds are in your favor if you exercise first thing in the morning.

When you exercise early in the morning, it "jump starts" your metabolism and keeps it elevated for hours -- sometimes up to 24 hours! That means you're burning more calories all day long just because you exercised in the morning!

When you exercise in the morning you'll be energized for the day! Personally, I feel dramatically different on days when I have and haven't exercised in the morning.

Many people find that morning exercise "regulates" their appetite for the day. They aren't as hungry -- and they make better food choices. Several people have told me that it puts them in a "healthy mindset."

If you exercise at about the same time every morning -- and ideally wake-up at about the same time on a regular basis -- your body's endocrine system and circadian rhythms adjust to that. Physiologically, some wonderful things happen. A couple of hours before you wake up, your body begins to prepare for waking and exercise because it "knows" it's about to happen. Why? because it "knows" you do the same thing just about everyday just like your stomach knows when lunch time is about to happen. You benefit from your body knowing ahead of time for several reasons...

a) It's MUCH easier to wake-up. When you wake-up at different times everyday, it confuses your body and thus it's never really "prepared" to awaken.

b) Your metabolism and all the hormones involved in activity and exercise begin to elevate while you're sleeping. Thus, you feel more alert, energized, and ready to exercise when you do wake-up.

c) Hormones prepare your body for exercise by regulating blood pressure, heart rate, blood flow to muscles, etc.

For many people, that appointed time every morning becomes something they look forward to. It's time they've set aside to do something good for themselves... to take care of their body, mind, and psyche as well.  Many find that it's a great time to think clearly, pray, plan their day, or just relax mentally.

Research has demonstrated that exercise increases mental acuity... on average it lasts four to ten hours after exercise! No sense in wasting that while you're sleeping.

Exercising first thing in the morning is really the only way to assure that something else won't get in the way of your exercise time in your schedule. When your days get busy, exercise usually takes a back seat and you talk about doing it tomorrow!  Don't fall into that trap... !

If finding time to exercise is difficult, anyone can get up 30 to 60 minutes earlier to exercise (if it's a priority in your life). If necessary, you can go to sleep a little earlier. Also, research has demonstrated that people who exercise on a regular basis have a higher quality of sleep and thus require less sleep!  If you can only squeeze in 10 minutes in the morning and 10 afternoon and 10  at night, research has also shown that it can be as beneficial and sometimes more beneficial by breaking it up during the day… So don’t let a lack of time be an excuse to work out… This is your body and health we are talking about…

If a man achieves victory over his body, who in the world can exercise power over him? He who rules himself rules over the whole world.

You'll enjoy the rush and the power you will have!!!
I know I do !!!

He Who Has Health Has Hope !

He Who Has Health Has Hope !
He Who Has Hope Has Everything !

Dear Friends,

It is funny when you think that our reelected president's  health care plan has been written by a committee whose head says he doesn't understand it,  passed by Congress that has not read it, signed by our commander and chief  who smokes, funded by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's nearly broke. What could possibly go wrong?

When it gets right down to it, we all need to rely on ourselves and we all need to take the first second and every step after that to make sure our lives are moving in the direction we want them too...

This all begins with health...Without health life is not life; it is only a state of languor and suffering - an image of death.

It is sad to note that most people spend more time planning for a one week vacation than they do on their plan for their lifelong health...

The definition of health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity...

Is anyone in the world really healthy these days then?

Below is the cycle of how people have viewed that which is good for health...

2000 B.C.  Here, eat this root.

1000 B.C.  That root is heathen.  Here, say this prayer.

1850 A.D.  That prayer is superstition.  Here, drink this  potion.

1940 A.D.  That potion is snake oil.  Here, swallow this pill.

1985 A.D.  That pill is ineffective.  Here, take this antibiotic.

2000 A.D.  That antibiotic is artificial.  Here, eat this root.

You can see the cycle leads right back to where it started...

In other words... Getting back to the basics is the most important thing for your health of body and mind and social well-being which can lead to a life and a world absence of disease and infirmity...

We are in a good place when  we are happy, healthy, and prosperous beings; happiness, health, and prosperity are the result of a harmonious adjustments of the inner with the outer parts of ourselves and with our surroundings.

The new year is on its way...Let's find that inner/outer us and learn to love and work with our surroundings...

"Laughter is an instant vacation" Take many everyday!

New Year's Resolutions?

We all hear the word New Year’s Resolution but it may surprise you to find that only about 32% or Americans are likely to make New Year’s resolutions in 2012, down from last year… And more than 60% of those feel they will break their resolutions sometime during the year…

The end of the 2012 is quickly approaching…It's time to dust off the list of goals you made this year and see how many you were actually able to accomplish… Was it a good year?  Did you accomplish a lot of your goals? Not as many as you wanted?  Will you redo your goal list for next year to include the ones you didn't get done this year? Didn't make a list to begin with?

As it is written:
“If you don’t plan to succeed, you plan to fail.”
Make sure you "plan to succeed" in the new year!!!

Among the top resolutions are weight loss, exercise, stopping smoking, better money management and debt reduction and not necessarily in that order.

Regardless of whether or not you make a resolution for  the New Year, In the back of the minds of 75% of the US and probably most other countries is the pursuit of becoming healthier.

Therefore,  I’m sending this blog installment to you early so you can get a head start before the new year is upon us…

In this installment I will simply state reasons why weight lifting is vital and why weight lifting should be added to our weekly schedule for greater health...

Weight Lifting can… help with body fat, stress, heart disease, cancer, making you smarter and happier, building stronger muscles and less fatigue…

Weight lifting:

1.  Makes you feel HAPPIER! (less depression and anger)
2.    Builds muscles that burn calories 24/7
3.    Helps you to sleep better
4.    Helps make stronger bones and a younger body
5.    Helps the body to become more flexible
6.    Helps you to handle stress better
7.    Cancer and Diabetes and other sickness risk cut
8.    Makes your days more productive.
9.    In shape faster and stay in shape easier
10.  Adds healthy, active years to your life

These are just ten of the reasons to have a weight training program in your life…. There are many other benefits and reasons to be weight lifting…

In the next installation, I will lay out some simple and easy-to-do exercises that can help you to get in shape with or without weights…

“Our greatest happiness does not depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed us, but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation, and freedom in all just pursuits.”
Thomas Jefferson

Cheaper to Mail Your Car?

With regular gas prices ranging from $3.50 to $3.75 across the USA... one thing is certain--if you are traveling somewhere over the holiday seasons--it will be cheaper to hitch a ride with Santa or mail your car to your destination.

In the US our present economy has basically crushed the middle class and incomes has fallen by about $4,000 per family and at the same time health insurance premiums are higher, food prices are higher, utility bills are higher, and gasoline prices have doubled.

Most of my blogs here concern the health of the body and mind but with gas prices soaring, I thought it would be a good idea to send some tricks to help you stretch your gas dollars a little farther and make your wallet a little healthier too.  My brother and a friend of mine used to work for oil companies and sold gas to gas stations so they know the ins and outs of the industry and have sent me some tricks that you might want to try...

The price of regular gas is determined by how much the crude costs(64%), the cost of refining(12%), distribution and marketing(13%), and the taxes on it(11%).

With gas expecting to go higher...

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS

1) Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

*** A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps. ***

2) When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode; this will minimize the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

3) One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than most people imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where my brother and friend sold their gas, every truck that was loaded is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

4) If there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom that could cause major problems down the road. (no pun intended)

5) Turn your car off --You use gas when you turn on a car and you use a certain amount of gas when your car ( especially when AC or heater is running).  In most types of cars, energy saving will be positive if you know you will be stopping at a light or making a withdrawal at an ATM if you are you aren't moving for more than 30 seconds at a time...  This will help to keep your gas budget down...

Other hints mentioned:  Keep enough air in tired and tires balanced,  roll up the windows at higher speeds when traveling on highways and freeways for less turbulence, use the proper grade of motor oil -- wrong grade=more heat-- more gas consumption, chain air filter when needed but don't listen to the mechanic--they are out to get your money so look into how many times a year you should change the filter, and try finding gas stations a few streets in town where the gas prices should be cheaper than those stations you see on the side of the highway...
